Must see attractions in Rome

There are certain attractions in Rome that simply can’t be missed. The most famous and well-known is the Colosseum, the largest ancient amphitheatre in the world. Step back in time as you wander through this magnificent stadium, first used to host gladiator battles and other forms of gruesome entertainment. Completed in 72 AD, the Colosseum held up to 50,000 spectators – enough to fill most football stadiums in Italy today. Another impressive symbol of ancient Rome is the Pantheon, a former Roman temple and since 609 AD, a Catholic church. Once inside, you’ll note the famous domed ceiling which remains the world’s largest unreinforced concrete structure to this day. Gaze up at the oculus, an opening in the ceiling which lets natural light into the temple – an enchanting sight on sunny days.

Don’t forget to visit the Sistine Chapel, one of the Vatican Museum’s most beautiful buildings. During the rebuild of the chapel in 1477, Botticelli and Rosselli decorated the walls and ceilings in jaw-dropping artwork.
