As part of the Catalonia region, Santa Susanna has its own local flavours among the most famous Spanish dishes. Mostly recognised for its fish, salt cod is a renowned menu favourite. The secret is how its preserved, many restaurants will rub the bait in salt before leaving it to hang dry outside. Then it’s served in a salad, drizzled with olive oil and vinegar. Catalan fish stew is another attention-grabber and El Yate will serve you a thick patch. This restaurant has also been ranked number one in the resort, especially for its tapas and set menu which is roughly £20 for a starter, paella and a glass of Sangria. Cava is arguably the most popular drink in the area with bars dedicated to this Champagne replicated drink.

With highs of 17°C in January, the coldest month in Santa Susanna, there’s no bad day to hit the beach. Boasting a chain of three stretches, each with their own speciality, there’s a coastal spot with your name on it. From Platja de las Dunes with its kayaks, pedalo boats and paddleboards, watersports are a must-try here to Platja de Llevant with its paddle-friendly waters ideal for families. Lastly, Platja de las Caletas is a laid-back number with little surrounding it. Hideaway in small coves before hitting one of its secluded bars for a tropical cocktail. Stumble a little further afield and you’ll find a market stocked with artwork from local artists – the perfect souvenir.

With a festival to call its own in August, time your travels right to witness Santa Susanna Fiesta which features traditional dancing, parades and fireworks. Or, hop over to Barcelona to witness some of Gaudi’s finest work, before heading back and indulging in cured meats, gooey cheese and fresh fish.

Plunge down slides at Water World: Roughly 25 minutes away, Water World is the best of its kind in Costa Brava. Start at the wave pool where wild ripples will send you floating through its enormous pool, before turning 360 degrees under cascading waterfalls at the Rafting River. Next up is Water Mountain, the largest water coaster in Europe, while Storm will make you feel like you’ve been sucked into a vortex with its whirlpool. Adventurous types will be drawn towards X-treme Mountain which offers two minutes of spine-chilling ups and downs and Speed Furious is a vertical free-fall shoot only for the brave. Little ones can be found at Water World with its splashable waters, fountains and mini river.

Be adventurous at Activ Natura: As the name suggests, this one’s for adrenaline junkies and those who are at one with nature. Laser combat is the first of its many activities which is based on the same principles of paintballing or touch ball. The guns shoot infrared light and you’ll battle it out to find the black box, catch the flag and eliminate your opponents. Other highlights include 45-minute quad rides through the forest, this off-road exploration will see you splash through mud puddles and tackle steep ascents. Lastly, there’s a tree top adventure made up of cables, rope bridges and zip lines.
