Here stands the town’s historical palace, built in 1900 BC and destroyed 200 years later by an earthquake. Head through the preserved rooms and towers, where archaeologists once discovered hidden treasures. Find the remains of old staircases and the legendary sunken alter, then keep your eyes peeled for the Kernos Stone, located in the west wing of the palace. Finish your tour off in the exhibition hall, where you can truly soak up the fascinating past of this ancient site.

Land Rover Safari: One of the most popular excursions in Crete, head off-the-beaten-track and deep into the island’s tropics. Knowledgeable and skilled drivers will take you into the mountain tops, through small villages such as Kastamonitis and over the hillsides, all whilst filling you with information about your surroundings. There are numerous routes to take, but a stop at the Caves of Zeus are a must – the birthplace of this mythological god. Lunch will be served in a traditional taverna and followed by a drive along the olive groves and coastline.
