Food & drink in Limassol

Cypriot cuisine has been influenced by the Middle East and dishes are very similar to those you’ll find in Greece. You can expect to be eating koupepia, souvlakia and souvla – to name just a few. To wash it down, there’s a fantastic selection of local wine – primarily from the small village of Ayios Amvrosios which is known for its wines. There are plenty of bars to choose from in Limassol if you are heading out to try Cypriot drinks. Many are open until the early hours of the morning, such as Guaba Beach Bar. Here you can enjoy the backdrop of the ocean as you dance the night away to live DJs.

Beautiful beaches in Limassol

The beaches in Limassol are among the most impressive in Cyprus. There is a wide range to choose from, all with something different to offer you. Akti Olympion Beach is one of the largest, at 40 metres wide and more than a mile long. Rent a sunbed and get stuck into a good book, or head into the calm sea and try the various water sports on offer. Dasoudi Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag. It’s far smaller but the water is crystal clear and ideal for snorkelling. A short distance from the city you’ll find the unspoilt Lady’s Mile Beach, which is nearly 5 miles long. Close by is Limassol Salt Lake which attracts pretty pink flamingos.

Things to do in Limassol

Limassol is known for its castle which sits in the heart of the historic centre. It’s believed to be where Richard the Lionheart and Queen Berengaria were married. Separating the city from the sea is Molos, a promenade lined with palm trees, sculptures and water features. This is the ideal place for a sunset stroll or a daytime bike ride.

Step back in time at Kourion: This UNESCO-protected archaeology park dates back thousands of years and is one of the most impressive ancient sites on the island. It’s situated on top of a cliff, providing an impressive backdrop to the stony beach of the same name below. Here you can see various ruins including an amphitheatre.

Visit the Sanctuary of Apollo: A short distance from Kourion is the monument of the god Apollo, one of the most important religious sites in the country. It’s where Apollo Hylates – the protector of Kourion – was worshipped as god of the woodlands. This worship began back in the 8th century BC.
